It’s long been a bone of contention among solo river cruisers – supplements charged by lines looking to recoup the fares they would have made if a cabin had been occupied by a couple.
To the line, it just makes business sense. To the cruiser, it sound perilously close to discrimination.
But now, as the demographics mean there are more single sailors than ever before, lines are increasingly making special offers to attract them.
While most lines still charge solo travellers a premium to travel by themselves to cover the missed revenue of a twin-share, we found a series of special deals available right now – at the start of the busiest and most lucrative time in the river cruise calendar.

If you’re interested in sailing by yourself in Europe or Asia this year, Avalon Waterways has waived their single supplements for their itineraries on the Mekong and Irrawaddy rivers in Asia as well as selected sailings on the Rhine, Rhone and Danube. The British river cruise line has great deals for solo travellers. Guests can sail on the Rhone and visit places in Burgundy as well as Provence. The eight-day cruise is priced from just $2,709 and the cruise is onboard the MS Lord Byron. Rivera Travel is also known for its solo river cabins and dedicated single cruises which they will be hosting in November this year.
The boutique river cruise line has 11 itinerary options where solo travellers can save thousands of dollars on sailings through Italy, Portugal and more. For example, sail from Milan to Venice on this 10-day cruise which is priced from just $8,799 onboard the luxurious River Countess. Uniworld has offers running from now till November this year, if you’re looking to take a holiday in 2018.
Evergreen have some stunning offers on its 2018 sailings. The line has two offerings available on its Riviera and Horizon Decks for sailings in Europe between May till December. There are also great savings on itineraries which sail through France. Guests can more than $7,000 on selected sailings.
Popular with the American market, Tauck also offers some great deals for solo travellers. On certain cabin categories on their European river sailings, singles can save up to 50% on ever departure. And if you opt for a higher category cabin, you can even save up to $1,000 on five selected river sailings. Tauck have some lovely itineraries like a 14-day Royal Danube cruise where some of the highlights include Berlin in Germany and Krakow in Poland.
