It’s long been a bone of contention among solo river cruisers – supplements charged by lines looking to recoup the fares they would have made if a cabin had been occupied by a couple.

To the line, it just makes business sense.  To the cruiser, it sound perilously close to discrimination.

But now, as the demographics mean there are more single sailors than ever before, lines are increasingly making special offers to attract them.

While most lines still charge solo travellers a premium to travel by themselves to cover the missed revenue of a twin-share, we found a series of special deals available right now – at the start of the busiest and most lucrative time in the river cruise calendar.

Here are some of Cruise Passenger’s solo picks.

Avalon Waterways

If you’re interested in sailing by yourself in Europe or Asia this year, Avalon Waterways has waived their single supplements for their itineraries on the Mekong and Irrawaddy rivers in Asia as well as selected sailings on the Rhine, Rhone and Danube. Some of the highlight itineraries in Europe include a seven-night Romantic Rhine cruise from Amsterdam to Basel – priced at only $3,644. That’s a pretty amazing offer! Click here to find out more.
