OK, so you’re keen to river cruise. Our quick checklist will ensure you’re good to go!

All-inclusive

When weighing up itineraries, ships and lines, ensure you know exactly what “all-inclusive” means. You certainly shouldn’t be paying for a shore excursion on a river cruise.

Old ships vs new ships

Check the age of the ship and bear in mind that, generally, the lower the berth, the better the price. Do you have adequate room? Where will your luggage go? Are the facilities up to scratch? A newer vintage vessel should translate to more space in your cabin.

River cruise deals

Definitely keep an eye out for deals, waived single supplements and last-minute discounting (if you’re flexible with travel arrangements). However, veteran cruisers tend to book early – typically between nine and 16 months out, where possible – and certainly the reward in that is the better pricing.

Cruise bundle packages

Factor in the cost of after-cruise land stays, airfares, and travel insurance expenses. Some lines now offer bundles that package trip extensions and associated costs.

Make like a meerkat and compare the river cruise market!

Generally speaking, a European river cruise will be more affordable than, say, one meandering through the US. Seek advice from seasoned cruisers, travel agents and the cruise companies themselves. Visas and more extended land stays represent add-ons in destinations such as Asia, for example, so get as much information beforehand as you can to make a well-informed river-cruising decision.
