Bring out the roses. Put the champagne on ice. River cruise lines are creating more romance-themed itineraries to a bid to expand their appeal to younger travellers about to tie the knot.
U by Uniworld embarked on its romance marketing campaign earlier this year when it was featured on the popular reality show, The Bachelor on television.
The line now offers a $150 U Get the Rose romance package which includes a bottle of rose wine at check-in, rose petal turndown service on one night, breakfast in bed, a night time experience for two at the Eiffel Tower, a romantic movie on the top deck and one night glamping on the top deck in a tent for two.
APT/AmaWaterways has come up with a Renewal of Vows package for couples wanting to renew their vows on the line’s forthcoming luxury megaship, the AmaMagna. Couples will be given a vow-renewal certificate, a bottle of champagne on arrival, a gift certificate for two one-hour massage, a sunset excursion, a rose petal turndown service and a custom-made dessert. The $499 package price will be waived if the couple brings 10 or more guests on the cruise.
While the line does not offer destination wedding services because of the many rules governing a marriage licence in European cities, it will continue to hold symbolic renewal of vows ceremonies on board.
Avalon is also getting its act into the romance game with celebration packages which includes champagne, flowers, chocolates and cakes.
About 10 per cent of Avalon’s guests celebrate a special occasion when on board its river ships and numbers are increasing each year.
“From anniversaries to honeymoons to bucket list trips of a lifetime, we welcome all reasons to celebrate on board,’’ the company said.
Tauck also said it does not offer wedding performances on board because river cruise ships are not in international waters so performing weddings is more difficult.
However, the line does host symbolic vow renewal ceremonies and many couples celebrate anniversaries on its cruises.
River cruising especially to picturesque destinations like Paris and Venice, lends itself to romance packages.
