Tauck river cruises has revealed it will be offering Douro River cruises for the first time ever on a new ship, which will be making its debut in 2020.

The new ship, which will be named Andorinha, is being built specifically for the Douro River. The ship is named after a species of swallow that symbolises family, home and fidelity in Portugal and she will have an intimate setting – she’ll only be able to cater for 84 passengers.

“The Douro is a very different river, and so we’ve been consciously deliberate with the ship’s design,” said Tauck‘s CEO, Dan Mahar.

“We won’t be the first company to operate on the Douro when we launch next year, but in terms of infrastructure, we’re excited to have some surprises in store that will truly differentiate us.”

The line will be offering three itineraries on the Douro River: an 11-night cruise tour that includes a seven-night cruise with a two-night hotel stay in Lisbon as well as Madrid; there will also be a seven-night cruise only itinerary and finally, there will be a cruise dedicated just for families.

The departures are set for June/early July 2020 and the itinerary details and pricing will be revealed later this year.

Andorinha will feature 42 cabins, including 12 300-square-foot suites, 20 225-square-foot rooms, six 200-square-foot cabins and four 150-square-foot cabins.

It also will have several Tauck staples, including the Panorama Lounge, Compass Rose restaurant for fine dining, and Arthur’s, the casual eatery. The ship also will be staffed by a Tauck Cruise Director and three Tauck Director guides, as on other ships across the fleet.
